A guide to our lighthouses

The  Finisterien coastline, studied with jagged reefs has been made safer for over a decade by the string of lighthouses which  grace our coasts. A number of these maritime monuments are open to the  public, who, after an invigorating climb to the top, are rewarded with breathtaking views which stretch as far as the eye can see.

The lighthouse of the island of Batz

Cylindrical in form, built in 1836, it stretches 44 metres above the ground and 68 above the sea level. There are 210 steps to the top and visibility is 23 miles. It has been automated since 1995 and offers superb views of the island of Batz and the coastline.
Open from june to september in the afternoon. Open for groups all year (book in advance).


imageThe Stiff lighthouse

One of the oldest lighthouses in France, built on from two old towers dating from 1698. Automated, it's 1000W halogen lamp, when lit can be seen for up to 50km. It has 126 step and a focal point, 85 metres above sea level.

The Créac'h lighthouse

One of the most powerful lighthouses in the world, built in 1859 to highlight the two safe passages around the island. The position of its beacon on two levels is unique. It stands at 55 metres and is visible for up to 80 miles.


imageThe Eckmühl lighthouse

Inaugurated in 1897, built thanks to the generosity of the family of the prince of Eckmühl, the lighthouse stands 65 metres above ground and it's beacon can be seen for up 30km at sea. Built from Kersanton granite, finished with bronze and opaline inside. There are 307 steps, and at the foot of the lighthouse, there is a chapel which dates back to the XVe century.
Visits from 15 june to 15 september (out of season telephone in advance) 10h to 12h - 14h30 to 17h30.

The Trézien lighthouse
29810 Plouarzel

Completed in 1894, the lighthouse is located 1.5km north east of the point of Corsen delimiting the Atlantic ocean from the Channel. It's height is 37 metres, it has 182 steps and is visible for 23 miles. It has electric power since 1963 and is automated since 1986. Close by is the sea rescue and maritime surveillance base "Cross Corsen".
Visits from 15h30 to 18h (out of season you must book in advance).

Surrounded by the ruins of an ancient XVI century abbey, it was built in 1835 and has 167 steps. It stands 37 metres and is visible for 29 miles.
In summer : visits from 10h30 to 12h and 15h to 18h30. (Out of season, book in advance).

George Fisher / CRTBThe 'Ile Vierge' lighthouse

Dominating the coastline of Aber Wrac'h, it is the tallest lighthouse in Europe, measuring 82.5 metres. There are 392 steps and is visible for up to 27 miles. Built from granit finished with opaline inside.
Visits from the 1st of july to the 31st of August, 11h to 12h and 15h to 18h. Groups (20 people) can book (+33 (0)2 98 04 78 01) 24 hours in advance all year, depending on the tides. (Copyright : CRTB/Fisher George)

The lighthouse museum

Installed in the ancient power room of the Creac'h lighthouse since 1988. The exhibition retraces the history of the lives of the lighthouse keepers. There is an impressive collection of ancient instruments, models and films.
Out of season, open from 14h to 16h, except mondays. From the 1st of July to the 30th of September and school holidays open from 10h30 to 18h30 every day.
