Witness to the history of Brittany, the Nantes to Brest canal is a favourite tourist spot. The Finistère section of the canal is along the river Aulne. Whether you are on the canal banks or on the water, there are a wide variety of activities on offer: hiking along the tow paths, fishing, or navigating the canals... It is a wonderful way to discover the scenery of the countryside along the banks of the Aulne.
In Finistère:
Linking the Guilly-Glas lock in Port-Launay to the Port of Carhaix
Length: 104 km
Locks: 35
The canal was first built to transport freight between the natural harbour of Brest and the town of Nantes. Competition from the railways has seen commercial navigation replaced by fluvial tourism and fishermen, hikers, joggers, ... have replaced the horses along the tow-paths.
